01 Context

Nominal Treasury yields describe the quoted return on conventional government debt before accounting for inflation. Inflation-indexed Treasury yields are commonly used as a market measure of the real return available from Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities. The difference matters for Bitcoin because Bitcoin pays no contractual yield.

02 Why it matters

When investors can earn a higher inflation-adjusted return on government securities, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets rises. That can tighten financial conditions and reduce the relative appeal of Bitcoin, gold and long-duration equities.

The relationship is not mechanical. Bitcoin can rise alongside high real yields if spot demand, ETF flows or monetary concerns are strong enough. Real yields are best treated as a macro headwind or tailwind whose importance must be confirmed by the dollar and broader risk pricing.

Nominal yield, real yield and inflation compensation

A nominal Treasury yield combines the real return demanded by investors with compensation for expected inflation and other risk premiums. A TIPS yield is designed to represent an inflation-indexed return. Subtracting a comparable TIPS yield from the nominal yield produces an approximation of breakeven inflation.

Breakeven inflation is not a pure forecast of future consumer-price inflation. It can also reflect liquidity differences, risk premiums and positioning between nominal Treasuries and TIPS.

Why the direction matters for Bitcoin

Rising nominal yields are most restrictive when real yields rise with them. In that case, investors receive more purchasing-power-adjusted compensation from lower-volatility government debt, discount rates rise and dollar liquidity may tighten.

If nominal yields rise mainly because inflation compensation increases while real yields remain stable, the Bitcoin interpretation is less direct. Greater inflation concern may strengthen Bitcoin’s monetary narrative even while higher market volatility creates a near-term liquidity headwind.

Read rates as a system

The level, direction and cause of a yield move all matter. A falling real yield caused by credible disinflation is different from one caused by acute growth fear or intervention in a stressed bond market.

For that reason, The Bitcoin Signal reads real yields together with the dollar, the shape of the Treasury curve, equity volatility and observable Bitcoin demand. No single rate series is sufficient on its own.

03 · THE SIGNAL

Real yields describe part of Bitcoin’s opportunity cost. Rising real yields normally make the macro environment more restrictive; falling real yields can help, but only the surrounding dollar, inflation and demand signals reveal whether liquidity is genuinely improving.

04 What to watch

10-year real yieldDirection over level

A sustained decline reduces the inflation-adjusted return available from Treasuries and can ease pressure on non-yielding assets.

10-year nominal yieldDecompose the move

Compare it with the real yield to distinguish changing inflation compensation from changing real rates.

DXYLiquidity confirmation

Falling real yields with a weaker dollar are usually more supportive for Bitcoin than falling yields during a defensive dollar rally.

Bitcoin spot demandIndependent confirmation

ETF flows and spot participation show whether easier rates are translating into actual demand.
